The first sign of life around Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, are said to be some 40,000 years back, when local tribes first roamed its river banks. These days, Perth remains an attractive option, for its vibrant city center and proximity to the best that nature has to offer.
Since its founding in'29 by British sea Captain Stirling, the city has been in continuous habitation along the banks of the Swan River, some twenty kilometers off the Indian Ocean. Today its population is estimated at 1.65 million people.
For a superior view of the city, hop on a scenic cruise down the Swan River., the city's lifeline. Many boats offer dining and entertainment packages in the evening.
When the city and river sights leave you wanting more, head downtown and get into Perth's excellent shopping. Anything from souvenirs to Aborigine arts and crafts are for sale, as well as brand name designer clothing and shoes. If you want to prep for a weekend expedition, Perth offers explorers the means to gear up for a surf safari or a trip to the mountains, with camping and surf equipment at hand.
Nearby in Kings Park there are many places to get a bird's-eye view of Perth high up on Mount Eliza. See the bushland of Australia and the many native species of birds and plant life. You can also tour the Botanic Gardens or bring along a picnic basket for an ideal afternoon. In the summer, look for open-air concerts or the outdoor cinema.
Just outside downtown Perth you'll find the Perth Zoo. See all the wonders of Australian wildlife. The kangaroos, wallabies and dingoes are all on display here, in a place where you'll be safe encountering them.
For a look inside old Perth, check out the colonial-era Old Mill from'32. The setting transports you to a simpler time when Perth was more of an outpost than a bustling metropolis. A tour through the mill will bring visitors back to when Aborigine tribes warred with early settlers and the fight to preserve the mill was won in the'50s.
For a taste of Tudor England, albeit in Australia, visit the pedestrian streets of London Court. In the cozy confines of this tiny thoroughfare, have a coffee in the outdoor cafes and transport yourself to another time. Snap a photo of the great clock at St. George Terrace.
For a relaxing weekend on the beach, visit Perth's Sunset Coast. From Mindarie Keys at the northwest to Cottlesloe just below, west of downtown Perth, you'll find the perfect alternative to the city's urban flow. In the summer months, the beaches of Swanbourne and Scarborough tempt city dwellers with their pristine climate and excellent accommodations.
While in Perth, you'll find a number of five-star hotels which will suit the most discriminating traveler. There are also a number of mid-range hotel options.
Perth's culinary scene is tops in Western Australia. The finest palettes of the world will be satisfied by the impressive lineup of restaurants scattered throughout the city. For a taste of the good life, try a different restaurant every night of the week.
